Final Project Proposal

My passion before coming to school was painting. However with my foundation classes, I haven't had the time to devote to this hobby. Thus for my final time arts project, I want to take the opportunity to paint again. At the same time, I do want to incorporate some multimedia aspects.

MY BIG IDEA would incorporate:

- painting
- stop motion

The story line:
- Video clip of me painting a certain image which would be a still life of objects, possibly a collection of junk food and candy.
- Then the images would pop out from the canvas and move off the canvas leaving a blank space. ( stop motion )

Process:
I think i would have to do this whole project in reverse.
- Stop motion the specific object moving onto the canvas.
- Once it is in position take the object off and film me painting the object.
- Then i would compile all my video in order and after make the animation video.

So in my final compilation, it would be a blank canvas to a painting back to a blank canvas.

Through discussion with peers, they suggested that I did the whole thing through pictures. For instance, if I was doing a soda can, I can first paint a red shape, take a picture, add value then take a picture, make individual letters, then take a picture. In the end, my whole video would be stop motion and it would be complete detached of human interaction.

Experimental Composition

The Passerby

Score:
The idea behind my score was to assign certain people on my floor random sounds. Then secretly document their movement in and out of the lounge. Over a two hour time period, nine different people spent time in our floor lounge. Each of them represents a different line. If they came into the lounge stayed for a bit and left, that created on sound. Most of them came in multiple times which lead to the repetition of sounds. In my score, one segment represents 5 seconds in the musical composition which actually represents 5 minutes in real time. It can be read from left to right while listening to the composition.

John Cage Article Response:

John Cage and experimental composers expanded the conventional idea of music to include various types of sounds and performances. Being that music is an artform, all types of music is worth making. It allows the individual artist time to express their feelings and ideas in an explorative manner. Whether or not we enjoy their work is not essential, but we should appreciate it. Like paintings and scupltures, music can erupt controversy but that is the beauty in expression.

Artificial Assemblage

My musical instrument was a found object: Colored Pencil Container. I was intrigued by the various components of the object including the metal casing, plastic trays and the colored pencils themselves. I thought that using different combinations of these parts would make interesting sounds.

Here is a short video of me making the sounds.

Re-Edited Commercial

My original commercial was called "Jone's Big Ass Truck Rental and Storage Facility". The type of advertisement is known as "tell it" or a testimonial. The narrator of the commercial was the man who owns the company. He is trying to sell his storage facility.

There was a lot of words to work with, so I tried to make a video with a new meaning. I used his emphasis of "Big Ass" "drunk", and "weed" to make him appear like he is trying to get a girl.

The dialogue of the new edited commercial is :

Do you know how big a BIG ASS is?
You got a Big Ass, I got space.
Bring it down here to my house.
You can rent a truck you can store a car. It don't care bring it down here.
You got weed, and I'll do anything you want.
The fact of the matter is, I'm pretty drunk right now.
Go ahead and give me a call or find me on them internets.

Document Depiction

For the Documentation / Depiction Project, I explored the increasingly familiar form of communication, texting. It was interesting to see my text messages pile up over the course of three days, Friday to Sunday. When I went back to reflect and analyze the messages, I realized that some of the texts, especially those pertaining to making plans, could have occurred over a simple short phone call. However, sometimes texting is convenient when everyone is not able to talk.

"Art Which Can't Be Art"

Response to "Art Which Can't Be Art" by Allen Kaprow

When Kaprow brushed his teeth, is this art or life? Does Kaprow succeed or fail?

The act of brushing one's teeth is merely another aspect of daily life. However, as Kaprow begins to analyze himself during this act, he dives into art. Through the development of Modernism, art was transformed away from cliche paintings and portraits and was created from everyday life. Kaprow succeeds in creating art for himself because he enjoys basking in this simplicity and analyzing the movements. Sometimes art has personal meaning; this is the case for Kaprow.

What activities do you do in "nonconscious" ways? What would change if you noticed them and documented them? How do these activities relate to the passage of time?

In todays world, we are constantly bombarded with millions of pieces of information every second but are only able to process a few. Thus is it a gift that we are able to do things automatically without thinking. Some activities I engage in without being aware are breathing, eating, sleeping. With both breathing and sleeping it had for a human to be consciously aware of what is going on. When I have tried to focus my attention on breathing, I found it to be an arduous task. Psychology has proven that our bodies are in a state of paralysis during sleep to prevent harmful actions. However, it would be quite interesting to see how many times I flip and turn in my sleep. When it comes to eating, I never savor the flavor of food in my mouth or pay attention to how little i am chewing. Chewing 22 time with every bit is not an option. In all of these activities, time happens simultaneously. Over a certain span of time, ones breath can shorten and increase with speed. In sleeping, depending on how long you have been asleep, the body and mind fall into certain sleeping categories based on time. With eating, the pace at which one consumes food is an element of time. When it comes to any food, time will allow the fruit to rot.
